Precautions for Using Electric Wheelchairs on Ramps

The advent of electric wheelchairs has greatly facilitated outings for the elderly and disabled. However, due to their electric controls, many people feel anxious about using them on ramps before making a purchase. Some may worry about the risk of tipping over. Below are some precautions for using electric wheelchairs on ramps.

Before Ascending a Ramp

Before using an electric wheelchair on a ramp, ensure that the tire pressure is normal, the battery is sufficiently charged, the brakes are functional, and the safety belt is fastened. Generally, ramps with a gradient of 5 degrees or less can be used without issue.

During Use

Electric wheelchairs have limitations on their ramp-climbing abilities. Each model has a maximum ramp-climbing angle. To prevent tipping over on ramps, many electric wheelchairs are equipped with small anti-tip wheels at the rear. These wheels prevent the wheelchair from tipping backward while ascending a ramp, but users should lean their bodies slightly forward to shift the overall center of gravity forward.

Descending a Ramp

When descending a ramp, control your speed and decelerate in advance. If the speed is too high, it becomes difficult to operate, increasing the risk of accidents.

While moving, especially when descending a ramp, do not use the parking brake. This can increase the risk of tipping over and personal injury. On long descents, continuously using the brake can cause it to fail. Electric wheelchair users should be cautious not to use the brake continuously.
